Intermediate Care Unit

Our 21-bed Intermediate Care Unit (IMCU) specializes in the care of technology-dependent children. Located on the 6th Floor of the hospital, the IMCU is designed for children who have been released from the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) but still need specialized nursing care and will require extensive discharge preparations before going home.

Features of the IMCU

Our IMCU features:

  • A staff of specially trained critical care nurses.
  • A satellite pharmacy that allows quick and safe access to medications and pharmacists.
  • Private rooms for each patient, with room for two parents or caregivers to sleep.
  • A family room for families to gather and relax.
  • A washer and dryer located on the floor for families.

The IMCU team

The IMCU team is led by:

  • Physicians who are all board certified in critical care medicine. Many physicians have additional training in pulmonary medicine, neonatology and anesthesiology.
  • Licensed advanced practice nurse practitioners trained in critical care staff the unit seven days a week.
  • Nurses specially trained in the technologic and psychosocial needs of children requiring prolonged or step-down intensive care.

Other members of the IMCU health care team include:

  • Respiratory therapists
  • Occupational and physical therapists
  • Speech pathologists
  • Pharmacists
  • Child Life specialists
  • Social workers
  • Chaplains or Spiritual Care team members
  • Patient advocate representatives
  • Clinical nutritionists

The IMCU partners with families and encourages them to actively participate in their child’s care. Our staff provides education and training for caregivers of patients who will be dependent on technology at home.
